Corrections to an article, questions about sources or image rights, and press or syndication enquiries are all welcome here. This is a one-person site, so replies are not immediate — but every correction is checked, and confirmed factual errors are fixed in the article.

What helps, depending on why you are writing

With the details below, a correction usually takes a single exchange rather than three. Leave out anything you do not have.

Correction

An error or a disputed source

Give the URL of the page and say which sentence is wrong and what it conflicts with. A reference for your version (title, author, page — or a link) means the check can be done in one pass.

Rights

Images and copyright

Illustrations here are chosen to be public domain or freely licensed, with author, holding institution and source stated on each plate. If you believe something is used in error, send the page URL, where on the page the image sits, and your standing as a rights holder. Anything unresolved is taken down promptly.

Press

Press, syndication and contributions

Please include your organisation, the intended outlet, timing and length. Quoting the articles themselves is already permitted, with the source stated, under the terms of use.

Bug

Something is broken on the site

Send the page URL, your device and browser, and what you saw on screen. For a layout problem, even knowing whether you can take a screenshot helps narrow it down.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a reply take?

This is a one-person site, so a reply usually takes a few days and occasionally up to a week. Some messages do not get a reply, but every reported error is checked.

What happens when I report an error?

The claim is checked against several sources. Where a factual error is confirmed, the article is corrected. Where it is a difference of interpretation, both readings may be noted in the article. The rules are set out in the editorial policy.

May I quote or republish an article?

Quotation with the source stated — site name and page URL — is free within the limits of copyright law. Republishing an article in full or in large part needs permission in advance. See the terms of use.

Can I get advice on my own strategy or decision?

This site analyses the structure of historical cases; it does not give professional advice on business, investment or legal matters. Questions about the content of an article are welcome.
