Person

Petre Dumitrescu

Commander, Romanian Third Army (the northern flank)

Life: 1882–1950

The commander made to hold the seam, who reported his weakness accurately and was still not reinforced.

The Romanian general who held the northern flank along the Don. He reported repeatedly that he lacked anti-tank weapons and that his frontage was too long, and asked to be strengthened; the requests were not met. "The flanks can be held by the allies" was a German hope, not a report from the ground. On 19 November the Soviet main effort came at precisely that front and his army broke in days. The fact remains that someone had said it would break before it broke.

Strategic signature — the man made to hold the seam

Recurring patterns

01

Report the shortfall accurately

He named the missing anti-tank weapons and the length of his frontage. The reading itself was right.

02

Requests do not carry inside a coalition

The leading partner's resources go first to the leading partner's troops. An ally's request waits.

03

After the defeat only the blame remains

"The allied troops were weak" serves as the explanation, and why they were left weak is not asked.

Strengths and limits

Strength

Did not understate his own weakness and passed it up the chain.

Limit

In the coalition's allocation of resources his voice did not carry the weight to move the allocation.

Connection to Stalingrad

The encirclement began not at the city but at his front. A seam is visible long in advance — to whoever has been made to hold it.
