Person

Võ Nguyên Giáp

Minister of Defence, North Vietnam

Life: 1911–2013

The most famous soldier in North Vietnam, who did not plan its most famous operation.

Known worldwide for encircling the French at Điện Biên Phủ. His signature was not a taste for decisive battle but a refusal of one until the conditions were assembled. He was sceptical of a simultaneous urban uprising, was outside the centre of the planning through late 1967, and was abroad for medical treatment. His part in this case consisted largely of not being there.

Strategic signature — refuse the decisive battle until the conditions are there

Võ Nguyên Giáp is remembered for encircling the French at Điện Biên Phủ. But his signature was not a taste for decisive battle; it was refusing one until the conditions were assembled, then concentrating everything at once. At Điện Biên Phủ he withdrew his own plan for an immediate assault and spent weeks hauling guns into the hills instead.

Which is why he was sceptical about a simultaneous urban uprising. Through late 1967 he was outside the centre of the planning, and abroad for medical treatment3. His role in this case consisted largely of not being there.

Recurring patterns

01

Wait until the conditions exist

Avoid the decisive engagement until strength, firepower, supply and ground are all in place. Being able to wait is itself a capability.

02

Spend time on preparation

At Điện Biên Phủ he spent weeks moving artillery over the hills. A long preparation is not weakness.

03

Fame and authority are different things

The best-known North Vietnamese soldier in the world was outside the planning of the largest operation of 1968.

Strengths and limits

Strength

Declines battle on bad terms and preserves strength until the shape is winnable.

Limit

Under political pressure to settle it now, that caution loses influence — and here it was simply set aside.

Connection to Tet

The famous general did not plan the most famous operation of his war. It is the personal version of what this site keeps finding: credit everything to one day and the years that built it disappear.
